Oxytocin is Amazing!

Ahhh – the Amazing Oxytocin Molecule

In PraiseMoves, the gentle deep diaphragmatic breathing and movement we do set off a wonderful cascade of physiological processes to calm the mind and body.

Biochemical responses occur during stretching workouts. It reduces adrenal stress chemicals (called catecholamines), and boosts oxytocin levels (pronounced “oxy-toe-sun;” the “bonding” or “trust” hormone—said to help mothers bond with their babies, and bring couples closer together).

In addition to being an aid in weight control, relieving depression, and helping to alleviate social anxiety by helping to produce feelings of trust, studies show that oxytocin has the ability to reduce stress. Considering the toll that stress takes on the body, that can be a major benefit.

Oxytocin has also been observed to reduce cortisol in the body and lower blood pressure. Digestion is also improved, which is often disturbed by high stress levels. In addition, oxytocin and oxytocin receptors can be found in the intestinal tract, improving digestion and elimination as well as decreasing intestinal inflammation.
