Praiselates certification overview Part 1

Praiselates certification overview Part 2 and 45-minute Workout

Praiselates 45-minute WORKOUT

Here are some questions that have come in:
1. Regarding Diastasis Recti:
In addition to modifications listed in the manual for each Praiselates exercise—
From Tiffany Avila: The website "Every Mother" has a good page on Pilates modifications for women with diastasis recti. This could help the other CPIs with weak core (core muscles, rather).
That is where I found some of my personal modifications.
Note: Realize this site also promotes yoga, so be aware of that and consider the source if/as/and when you select material from this site. The physical information is good. Any spiritual guidance is not.
2. Purchasing Pilates Rings, Balls, Etc.
From Cinky Jones: Any recommendations on purchasing the Pilates ring?
Answer from Jessica Guthrie: You can find them on Amazon, but they're not necessarily all equal. I found a good quality one from the brand Pro Body. Also, 3 companies that are specifically Pilates products are: Balanced Body, Stott, and Merrithew.
3. Order of the Praiselates Exercises
From Nicole Wegscheider: Is it best to do all 22 exercises to activate all the parts of the body?
Answer: The Classic Pilates Mat Exercises feature the founder's core 34 exercises -- starting with The Hundred exercises (which we call ATTEND in Praiselates) and finishing with Push-Ups (which we call FAITHFUL).
I have taken 12 of the most challenging out, leaving 22 exercises remaining. They are featured in the same order as Joseph Pilates placed them in his original workout (minus the 12 we've removed).
So, yes, doing all 22 in an exercise session in the order they appear on the 4-sheets handout is recommended.

4. REDEEMED EXERCISE
From Cinky Jones: For REDEEMED - can we have our hip to torso in line with mat side and legs straight out towards the opposite corner for the exercise? Does this change the benefits?
ANSWER: Modifications for REDEEMED are listed on page 66 of the Manual. In researching Pilates Side Kicks exercise, we have only seen hips in line with torso.

RESIST- are we rotating like an arch/half circle or doing circles?
ANSWER: Pages 73 and 74 in the Manual mention about circling the legs. To modify, place hands on blocks, or can come onto forearms, or bend knees slightly as one is building strength in the core muscles.

5. ATTEND
From Judy Sikes: Is ATTEND a sufficient warm-up for a Praiselates class?
ANSWER: Since ATTEND corresponds to the Pilates Hundred exercise, in a classical Pilates mat class, the Hundred is done at the beginning of the class, often as one of a few Pilates warm up exercises. The reason given for it being a suitable warm-up for a Pilates workout is this: the quick pattern of breathing helps to increase heart rate, warm the core muscles, and mentally prepares students for a full Pilates abdominal workout.

6. Hypermobility issues:
From Tiffany Avila - While doing the REDEEMED exercise, my leg pops out of my hip socket. What is the best way to modify that for hypermobility?
ANSWER from Jessica Guthrie: Make your movements smaller!

7. Names for Praiselates exercises.
From Enzina D to Me - How did you choose the names of each exercise and the biblical historical account to each exercise?
ANSWER: Each Praiselates exercise is named for a WORD that appears in the scriptural affirmation which corresponds with that exercise.
For example, ATTEND takes its scriptural affirmation from Proverbs 4:20-22 which begins, "My son, ATTEND to my words..."  SENT is taken from Psalm 107:20, "He SENT His Word and healed them..."

Regarding the Biblical Historical Accounts attributed to each exercise: You may share as much or as little of these as you are led before or during the exercise, or separately as part of a WWJD R&R at the end of class, or as part of a Bible study before or after class. The majority of them were chosen because of a correlation I sensed between the exercise's scriptural affirmation and a particular historical account of healing.

For example, RANSOM's Scriptural Affirmation from Job 33:24-25 speaks of one's flesh being made as fresh as a child's. This appears to have happened for the 10 lepers in Luke 17:11-19 -- especially for the one who came back to thank and worship the Lord. Jesus said to him, "Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole."

8. IN-PERSON PILATES CLASSES?
From Enzina D - Do you recommend in-person Pilates (non-new agey) classes in addition to practicing with YouTube classical Pilates?  Although they will probably do the 34 exercises instead of the 22....  Thanks
ANSWER: That is up to you. Realize, however, there are not many "classical" mat Pilates classes out there. Jessica may know more about that, but from what I've seen most Pilates classes have a mix various exercises in them: Pilates, yoga, even Barre and Calisthenics.

9. SCRIPTURAL AFFIRMATION MEMORIZATION:
From Judy Sikes - For the exam, which verses should we memorize besides Ps 34:1...all of them?
ANSWER: The more Scriptural Affirmations you have memorized the better. This will come with practice. You will want to have the FIRST FIVE a part of you to the best of your ability for your exam video.
The others will come in time, becoming easier and easier for you as you practice.

10. MODIFICATIONS & THE TEST:
QUESTION - I have always had difficulty with my abs so the Sent and Fulfilled exercises are a big challenge for me.  You mentioned some great modifications which gave me hope that I could certify, but my question is - were those just for learning as I build up ab strength or can I certify and teach with modifications?

ANSWER - You can do your certification video using the modified version of any exercises, so long as the students you'll be teaching will ONLY be doing modifications, too. Once you have more core muscle strength, you can begin teaching the standard and advanced versions of the Praiselates exercises.

11. DO WE MENTION PILATES?
When we teach a Praiselates exercise do we also include that line that says “corresponds to" a particular Pilates exercise? Or do we just teach it with the Praiselates name?

ANSWER - At the beginning of class you can mention that Praiselates is "praise-infused Pilates." You may want to mention that the Praiselates exercises correspond to 22 of the Original Classical Mat exercises developed by Joseph Pilates. I would NOT mention the Pilates names with each Praiselates exercise because it could be confusing. We want students to recognize the Praiselates name because it reflects the Scriptural Affirmation accompanying the exercise.
